Decorating Easter eggs is an age-old family tradition! As kids get older, however, sometimes it can get a little dull to dye them the exact same way year after year. Here are some fun ways to involve kids of all ages in decorating Easter eggs!
1. Use crayons and washi tape to create designs
Before dipping the eggs in dye, try coloring on them with crayons (especially white or brown crayon – whatever the color of the egg is) to create designs that will allow the egg’s color to shine through the dye in unique patterns! You can also create designs on them with washi tape, which comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
2. Whipped cream watercolor patterns
Try sprinkling a few drops of food dye in a container of whipped cream, and use a toothpick to swirl it around a bit! You can make these all one color, or mix a few to create different effects. Then, dip hardboiled eggs into them until they are completely covered in whipped cream and set them aside for between ten minutes and half an hour depending on how light or dark you want the colors to be. Then, rinse them in cold water, and enjoy the watercolor eggs!
3. For older children / teens
Teens and older children may want to try things that are a little more intricate, which is where these ideas come into play! One fun way to color eggs that is better for older kids is making hot rock eggs. After boiling eggs, as usual, put them in the oven at 350 degrees for a few minutes. Once they are heated up, pull the tray out of the oven and pick up the eggs with tongs, and touch them to peeled crayons to get beautiful melted waxy patterns. Another fun way for older children to color eggs is using Sharpies and nail polish remover to make tie-dye patterns!
