Celebrating Valentine’s Day as a Family

Fun Valentines day activities

Most people think of Valentine’s Day as a romantic holiday, but it’s really just about love. Valentine’s Day is a great time to celebrate family love and bring the family closer together. For kids, this may sound boring at first, but there are many ways to make Valentine’s Day a fun family holiday for kids of all ages.

Here are some ways to have fun family time this Valentine’s Day!

Make a Sweet Treat

Valentine’s Day is another awesome excuse to enjoy some sweet treats. Instead of just buying candy, turn it into a fun family activity by making some of your own. There aren’t any rules for treats on this day, but try to make them festive by adding white, pink, and red colors. Some ideas include:

  • Chocolate covered strawberries. Drizzle on some white chocolate and festive sprinkles for an added touch.
  • Peanut butter cookies with a Hershey’s kiss in the middle.
  • Heart-shaped cookies of any kind.
  • Decorative cupcakes or a cake designed for the day.

Tell a Love Story

Share some stories filled with love with your kids. You could tell a story about the reasons you fell in love with their mom or dad, or a time you felt loved by a parent or sibling. Talk with your kids about what makes them feel loved and how they like to express their love as well. Remember, love stories don’t have to be romantic in nature. Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to talk about family love as well.

Watch a Movie About Love

Set up a cozy and fun movie night with the whole family. Choose an age-appropriate movie that everyone can enjoy. Be creative, the movie doesn’t have to be about a couple to promote love. For example, the Disney movie Frozen has a strong theme of love throughout, but it’s about the love between sisters, not a couple.

Share the Love

Use Valentine’s Day as a chance to share your love and appreciation for your family. Tell your kids that you love them and your favorite qualities about them. Sit down as a family and call grandparents, aunts/uncles, or other family members to catch up and share the love.

Valentine’s Day can be about so much more than romantic love. Use this holiday to express and show love as a family, and add in some fun activities to make the holiday enjoyable for your kids as well.
