Activities for Snow Days with Your Child

As soon as snow starts to fall, kids start hoping for a day off school thanks to heaps of snow all over! What can you do to make the most of these days being cooped up at home? Here are a few things you can do on snow days that don’t involve being out in freezing temperatures.

1. Make hot cocoa from scratch

We get so used to using those convenient little packets, but what about making hot cocoa from scratch? Let the kids help measure, and pick out a couple of special add-ins from the pantry! Candy canes, chocolate or special flavored chips, peppermint extract, and more common pantry items are fun ways to make plain hot cocoa a little more interesting! Some unconventional mix-ins are Nutella, peanut butter, and ginger. You may find a new favorite flavor!

2. Paper crafts

Not every holiday craft needs a seemingly endless list of supplies! You can make paper ornaments, Christmas trees, wreaths, and more, all with normal construction or printer paper! If you have markers, crayons, or glitter glue, that can add to the fun, but you can have fun using whatever you have on hand! For older kids, you can try making personalized shadow boxes together.

3. Enjoy a book or movie together

When the holidays get busy, it’s easy to feel like we have everything except downtime! Take a little time to rest with your kids, and gather in a main room with blankets and pillows to enjoy reading together, or enjoying a classic movie you all love. Leave all of the mobile devices – phones, laptops, tablets, etc – in another room so you can enjoy what you are doing together, without your mind escaping elsewhere.

Now you are prepped for the season of snow days and can go in with a game plan for fun using what you will already have on hand!
